Let’s start with a question that sparks way more debate than it should:
If you flat iron your hair… is it still natural?
Short answer: YES.
Long answer: absolutely yes—and let’s talk about why.
As a licensed beauty professional and hairstylist, I’ve heard this misconception more times than I can count. Recently, several clients shared that someone told them their hair was “no longer natural” simply because it was smooth, silky, and flat-ironed. And every time I hear that, two thoughts pop into my head:
- All we did was temporarily smooth your naturally curly hair.
- This is a perfect opportunity to educate.
What Does “Natural Hair” Actually Mean?
Natural hair has nothing to do with texture on a particular day and everything to do with what’s happening at the follicle level.
✔ No relaxers
✔ No perms
✔ No permanent chemical alteration to the curl pattern
If your hair meets those criteria, congratulations—you’re natural whether it’s curly, kinky, wavy, blown out, or silk pressed.
Flat ironing does not change the structure of your hair. It’s a temporary styling choice, just like twisting, braiding, or roller setting. Once water hits it? Those curls come right back—because that’s your natural texture doing what it does best.
The Judgment Has to Go
What’s wild to me is how comfortable people are passing judgment on someone else’s hair.
Straight. Curly. Wavy. Kinky.
All natural. All valid. All your business.
There’s no hierarchy in natural hair. One texture isn’t “more natural” than another, and choosing to wear your hair smooth doesn’t take away from your curl identity. At the end of the day, natural hair is natural hair—period.
Where Scalp Care Comes In
Healthy hair—no matter how you wear it—starts with a healthy scalp. Excessive heat, poor technique, or lack of proper scalp care can cause long-term issues that go far beyond a style. This is why education matters, especially for today’s hairstylist.
Understanding hair science, scalp health, and styling integrity allows us to protect the hair and elevate our services—whether we’re performing a silk press or creating a full head spa experience.
