Professional Flat Ironing Tips for Naturally Curly Hair | Smooth Hair Without the Creamy Crack

The creamy crack is cancelled — and smooth, healthy hair is officially in.

Gone are the days when relaxing naturally curly hair felt like the only option. Today’s women want naturally smooth hair without chemicals, and as a licensed beauty professional, I’m here to tell you: it’s absolutely possible and healthier for the hair and scalp.

Silk presses, flat ironing, and smoothing techniques have become the go-to for clients who want versatility without compromising hair integrity. And honestly? I love that for us.

Many black women with naturally curly hair have a lot of hair — thick, dense, and beautiful — but historically, manageability pushed us toward relaxers. While relaxed hair had its moment, time showed us the truth: broken strands, compromised scalp care, and long-term damage. (Also… if it burned, that was your first clue 😅.)

Let’s talk about how to get that silky, smooth finish the professional way — no creamy crack required.

My Professional Flat Ironing Tips for Silky Smooth Results

These are the same steps I use behind the chair as a hairstylist focused on healthy hair and scalp-first techniques.

1. Start With a Clean Foundation

After shampooing twice and conditioning once, the hair is clean, balanced, and ready to be smoothed. ***You must shampoo at least twice.

Pro Tip:

  • Use a blow-dry cream for coarser textures
  • Use a lotion for finer textures

Distribute the product evenly from roots to ends, then blow-dry thoroughly.

2. Round Brush in Small Sections

Work in ¼-inch sections and round brush the hair.

Important: Hair must be completely dry.
Round brushing is the first and most important step to naturally smooth hair — it pulls the natural oils from the scalp onto the hair shaft and it also stretches the curl pattern and reduces the number of flat iron passes needed later (hello, healthier hair).

3. Choose the Right Flat Iron Temperature

Set your flat iron based on hair texture:

  • Up to 450°F for coarse textures
  • As low as 300°F for finer hair

Higher heat doesn’t equal better results — adjust the heat accordingly.

4. Protect Before You Press

Lightly spray a flat iron heat protectant, then part the hair again into ¼-inch sections.

5. Heat the Roots First

Place the flat iron parallel to the section and do a quick pass at the root near the scalp.

Safety Tip: Angle the plates away from the scalp so steam doesn’t rise and burn the skin — healthy hair starts with healthy scalp care.

6. One Smooth Pass

Clamp the flat iron onto the section and glide it down slowly while guiding the hair with a carbon comb.

Game-Changer Tip:
Carbon combs do not melt and using a comb dramatically increase smoothness. Once you try it, you’ll never go back.

7. Repeat With Intention

Repeat steps 5–6 until the entire head is silky, smooth, and full of movement — not stiff, not greasy, just chef’s kiss.

Why This Matters for Licensed Beauty Professionals

Flat ironing isn’t just about sleek results — it’s about protecting the scalp, preserving the cuticle, and educating clients on healthier styling options. When hairstylists understand both technique and scalp science, client trust (and retention) skyrockets.
