Is Your Hairstyling Business Running You? A Wake-Up Call for Licensed Beauty Professionals Ready to Scale

Read time: 3 minutes

If your business can’t survive without you showing up every single day, it’s time to ask yourself a hard—but freeing—question: who’s really in control?

If you don’t have medical insurance, a bookkeeper, money set aside for emergencies, or the flexibility to take the vacation of your dreams, I hate to be the one to tell you… your business is running you.

And if you’re a licensed beauty professional or hairstylist, you’re not alone.

In cosmetology school, we weren’t taught how to run a business. Truth be told, most of us came in already knowing how to do hair. What we didn’t learn was how to think like business owners—especially once we stepped into booth rental, salon suites, or independent spaces.

From Stylist to Business Owner—Without a Manual

When I first graduated, my only goal was to make money doing hair. I didn’t know what a 1099 was. I didn’t understand taxes, bookkeeping, pricing for profit, or accounting for product expenses. I just knew how to work—hard.

My first position was in a commission-based salon, and honestly, it felt safe. Pricing, taxes, and bookkeeping were handled for me. That was the benefit. The downside? I didn’t control my income, my services, or my growth.

I wanted more freedom. More impact. More ownership.

The Studio Space Wake-Up Call

In 2014, I stepped out of my comfort zone and opened my first salon studio. I was excited—and completely unprepared.

I kept the same pricing structure without realizing my expenses had doubled. I now needed a bookkeeper. An accountant. A system for taxes. I was buying all my own products. Yet fear kept me stuck. Fear of raising prices. Fear of losing clients.

Without realizing it, my business was running me from day one.

The Shift That Changed Everything

Everything changed when I took my first business class. That’s when it finally clicked: I wasn’t just a hairstylist—I was a business owner.

I needed pricing that accounted for:

  • My time
  • My expertise
  • My future
  • My freedom

I wanted vacations. I needed retirement planning. I wanted a business that could sustain me long-term—not burn me out.

That realization is what led me to scalp care.

Why Scalp Care & the Head Spa Model Works

When I niched down into scalp care and head spa services, my business transformed. I was no longer chasing income—I was building it intentionally.

Scalp care allowed me to:

  • Charge premium prices with confidence
  • Work smarter, not longer
  • Create repeat clients who valued results
  • Step into my role as an educator and authority

Most importantly, it helped me build a business that served me, not the other way around.
